Computer Programming – A comprehensive study of programming in C++. Prerequisite: A grade of B or higher in Technology I, Algebra I and Geometry.
Journalism- The students will learn creative journalistic writing and ethical reporting. Students will be responsible publishing a bi-monthly student newspaper. Students will also produce video marketing pieces and a student television series. Read the most recent edition of the school newspaper here.
Personal Finance – The students will learn how to save money and build wealth, establish a budget that works, identify and understand different types of investments, set and achieve financial and career goals, describe the many dangers of debt and become an aware consumer. In addition to business, the students will be introduced to the joy of giving, through a Christian perspective.
Horticulture- This class focuses on a basic introduction of the horticulture industry. This will include an overview of general plant growth principles, including soil and growing medium(s), fertilizer, pesticides, temperature, sunlight, water, and more. Students will learn the basics of growing fruit and vegetables, annual and perennial greenhouse production, trees and shrubs and ornamental plants and flowers. There is a significant hands on component starting many vegetable plants from seed including 8-10 varieties of tomatoes and peppers, eggplant, various herbs, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, watermelon, cantaloupe, summer and winter squash, beets, and more. Students will focus on seed identification, actual seeding, transplanting from smaller to larger plug trays, then transplanting in the field and/or garden. Technology I – This course includes an in-depth study of technology including the essential functions of word processing, presentations and spreadsheets as well as exploring new technologies and applications.
Family and Consumer Science – This class is an introduction to cooking, sewing and other home-making skills.
Web Design – Includes a study of Web design with emphasis placed on html coding and Microsoft Frontpage 2000. Prerequisite: Technology I.
Yearbook – This class incorporates design, photography, writing and time management to publish the annual yearbook for Maplewood Academy. Students are responsible for assignments and deadlines for all the components of the yearbook.
