MWA’s long time history teacher, Evan Swanson, was born and raised in Ute, Iowa.  After high school graduation, “Swanee” attended Union College where he majored in history, and also met and married the love of his life, Evie Johnson.  Evan’s first job after graduating from college was at Maplewood Academy, which happened to be the alma mater of his wife, Evie. Also Evan and Evie both had family members who were Maplewood students at that time.  So it was with fear and trepidation that they, along with their toddler son, Bruce, moved to Maplewood Academy in the fall of 1963, thinking that they’d give this job situation a try for a few years, perhaps.  Now, after fifty-seven years of teaching, Evan has retired and he continues to be active around campus.  In addition to history, Evan also taught biology for twenty years, plus chemistry and general science as needed. Evan enjoys gardening, walking, observing nature, playing tennis, and, especially, interacting with students.
